The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl

"The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl" is a fiction novel for middle graders by author Stacey McAnulty.

I chose to write a review on this book as it is one of my favourites and every time I re-read it I enjoy it immensely. I think that a lot of other people would enjoy reading it as much as I did.

Lucille "Lucy" Callahan was struck by lightning when she was eight years old and survived. The lightning strike did have one major side effect though - Lucy is now a math genius. Really genius. It's called being a "savant".

Soon after Lucy and her Nana found out about her crazy math abilities, they moved house and Lucy was pulled out of public school. She has been homeschooled ever since and at age 12 is technically ready for college! But now Nana wants Lucy to go to middle school for a year to make some “real” friends and interact more with kids her own age. Lucy says that she has friends already - from her online math websites, but apparently that doesn't count.

Lucy tries to act like a normal student and fit in, but thats tough. Especially since her classmates make fun of her rigid routines and her super-powered brain.

But Lucy soon starts to make some friends, Levi and Windy. They even form a group together for their Social Services project, which is to volunteer at the Pet Hut - a local animal shelter, where Lucy forges a great bond with Pi (a dog at the shelter).

The story follows Lucy's journey in middle school, her friends, the Pet Hut, and how her life may not be just numbers after all.

This book is a celebration of friendship, and reminds us to sometimes step out of our comfort zones and embrace our differences.

5/5 stars.
