A Pinch Of Magic - Michelle Harrison
Brave, adventurous Betty, curious, adorable Charlie and proper, quiet Fliss.
All Betty wants and has ever wanted is to have an adventure and leave Crowstone island.
But when an attempted adventure goes wrong, Betty and her sisters find themselves in possession of some magical objects: a carpet bag with powers of teleportation, a set of nesting dolls with powers of invisibility and a mirror with powers of communication.
Along with receiving these items, they learn of the family curse - that prevents them from ever leaving their island home at the cost of death by the next sunset.
So they set out to break the curse and stumble upon a mysterious prisoner, Colton, who claims that he knows the secret to the curse, and they then find themselves in great danger.
In order to stay alive and break the curse - they begin to unravel a mystery that goes back centuries and battle with sorcery of a dangerous kind.
About The Author: Michelle Harrison
Her first children's novel, THE 13 TREASURES, won the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize and was followed by two sequels: THE 13 CURSES and THE 13 SECRETS, and a prequel, ONE WISH.
She's also written UNREST, a ghost story for young adult readers, and THE OTHER ALICE. My latest novel is A TANGLE OF SPELLS, the third in the best-selling PINCH OF MAGIC ADVENTURES.
Before becoming a full-time writer she worked in publishing as an editor, and also as a bookseller. Prior to that, she worked in bars, a bakery, and a second-hand record shop to make ends meet while trying to get her first book deal. She lives in Essex with her son, Jack, and three cats called Marmite, Sorsha, and Widdershins.
What I thought of the book:
This book is absolutely amazing and the best that I have read in a long time (also the first 5 star read in a long time).
My favourite part about this book was the atmosphere and characters as well as the writing.
The sisters are each special in their own way, and incredibly real and relatable.
The atmosphere in this book is incredible and sucked me in so much that when the adventure got a little threatening I had to read something else for a while!
The plot, intrigue and logic are also extremely strong in this book and the story takes unexpected turns that kept me hooked the whole way through and it was never boring or slow. In fact, the story is pretty fast-paced.
The ending was sort of unexpected and sad, but great!
I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have been wanting to read it for a long time and have heard a lot of hype about it - and this is a book that actually lives up to the hype!
I would recommend it to everyone to read, even if you don't usually read middle grade books. If you like magical, adventures and stories with strong character bonds - you will love this book!
