Some Places More Than Others - Renée Watson

Soon to be 12 years old, Amara is visiting New York for the first time with her Dad for her birthday.

She lives in Oregon, with her parents and is about to be a big sister.

Amara is extremely excited to finally be going to New York, to connect with her roots and her father's side of the family.

Before leaving, she finds out that the day she was born was the same day that her Grandma Grace passed away and that her Grandpa Earl and her father have not talked for 12 years since. So she is determined to make things right between them.

But New York is not everything she expected it to be, it's super busy, noisy, cold, and her cousins can be pretty mean sometimes.

In the end, though, her vacation is one to remember.

She truly learns to connect with her heritage and the people she loves.

What I thought of the book:

This book was amazing!!

My favourite part about this book was definitely the characters and the atmosphere. It is an extremely family-oriented coming-of-age story, and while reading I felt as if I really got to know each character and Amara was a great character and reading from her point of view was very enjoyable.

It was very well written, and I could relate to Amara and most of the other characters.

There is no real plot, other than her connecting to her roots and other details about her trip.

This book definitely gets a 10 for enjoyment. It was a quick read but a great story. I always find it impressive when an author can write a short book with words that pack a punch.
