Keeper Of The Lost Cities - Shannon Messenger

12-year-old Sophie Foster is a Telepath, which means she can read minds and hear everyone's thoughts. She has kept this a secret since she was 5 years old, and even her own family has no knowledge of her ability.

But everything changes the day she meets a mysterious boy, Fitz who has the same powers that she does.

She discovers that there is somewhere she does belong, and she must leave her human world behind or she will be in grave danger.

And suddenly, Sophie needs to forget everything she's learned and start a new life in a magical world. She discovers the Lost Cities, a secret hidden world where things that would normally be impossible are the reality.

And just as she has begun to settle into her new life, her past comes back to haunt her.

About The Author:

Shannon Messenger graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts where she learned—among other things—that she liked watching movies much better than making them. She’s studied art, screenwriting, and film production, but realized her real passion was writing stories for children. She’s the New York Times and the USA Today bestselling author of the award-winning middle-grade series, Keeper of the Lost Cities, as well as the Sky Fall series for young adults. Her books have been featured on multiple state reading lists, published in numerous countries, and translated into many different languages. She lives in Southern California with an embarrassing number of cats.

What I thought of the book:

I have read this book 2 times now, and the first time I read it, I loved it and this time I'm very surprised that I thought it was that good! I first read this book because it is extremely popular and many people in my grade enjoy it, but I don't understand why!

One good thing about the book is the word building, but the world is way too perfect and everyone is way too nice for it to be believable.

The main character, Sophie is so unbelievably annoying! (Though this means it is well written). She has more than one power, while everyone other than her is extremely lucky to manifest. Everyone is constantly telling her how special she is, which is really irritating.

Sophie has a nervous habit of pulling out her eyelashes. And she pulls them out every few pages (and it's a big book!), how does she even have any eyelashes left?! I looked up the eyelash count is: 253 under the assumption that Sophie's eyelashes do not grow back, this is an estimated number of how many eyelashes she has in both eyes based on the specific number mentioned in the second book.

The amount of blushing is unheard of.

This book has the classic "chosen one" trope. To the point where, Sophie, who is so much the chosen one that nothing that she does in the book has any consequence, nothing is difficult, nothing is a struggle for her. She gets away with anything and has numerous people on her side.

I also read the second book soon after re-reading this, and Sophie is even more infuriating! Someone close to her has their life in danger and she keeps making it all about herself! And the only reason I continued the series is that the first book didn't provide me with any important answers.

Overall, a well-written book but with a poor plot (It is also pretty confusing).
