Starfish is about Ellie, a "fat" girl who has been bullied about her weight ever since she made a big splash while wearing a whale costume at her birthday party. 
Everyone in her family, except her dad, is constantly judging and teasing her and her mother is really horrible to her. 
This may be a story but every school everywhere in the world has a girl or two who face the same kind of problems Ellie does.
But with her therapist, two great friends, her dog, and her dad on her side - Ellie is reading to finally see herself as who she really is - a big beautiful girl. 


About the Author:


Lisa Fipps is a graduate of Ball State University, award-winning former journalist, current director of marketing for a public library (where she won the Sara Laughlin marketing award), and an author of middle-grade books. Starfish is her debut novel. She’s working on her next novel and several others. She currently lives in Indiana and lived in Texas. 


What I thought of the book:

Oh. My. God.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!

I've realised that I enjoy reading books in free verse, and one of my reading goals for 2021 was to read more of them.
I have been wanting to read this book for a while, and I'm so so glad that I did! It was hands down a 5-star book, and it was really quick to get through too. I read 80% yesterday and finished the rest today. 

The characters, atmosphere, writing, enjoyment of this book are all 10/10.

It is a positive book, about embracing yourself and standing up to bullies.

I did think it could have been a little longer, but it was still amazing.

PLEASE read this book!! In my opinion, everyone should.

For those of you who don't know what free verse is here is the first bit of the book: 

I step down into the pool.
The water is bathwater warm 
but feels cool
compared to the blisteringly hot air.
Kick. Gliiiiiiide.
Stroke. Gliiiiiiide. 
Side to side
and back again.
Dive under the surface.
Soar to the top.
Arch my back.
Flip. Flop.
As soon as I slip into the pool,
I am weightless/
Limiytless.
For just a while.
