Wizards Of Once - Cressida Cowell

Before I begin I would like to apologize for the big gap between my previous review and this one - I just didn't really feel like writing it. That said, I hope you enjoy reading this and maybe it will inspire you to pick up the book for yourself!

13-year-old wizard Xar wants magic more than anything. One day he decides to set out into the Badwoods to capture a witch and steal her magic.

Xar is greatly surprised when he captures Wish, a warrior princess, and her assistant bodyguard Bodkin.
Wizards and Warriors have been enemies for ages, so they both are a little put-off.

Xar, Wish and Bodkin then go on a perilous journey and become unlikely allies.

With witches, mean queens, sprites with attitude and dungeons - this book is a truly wild ride.

What I thought of the book:

Wow. The writing in this book - I cannot even begin to talk about it. It is SO GOOD!! 10/10 for sure. It is jam-packed with brilliant descriptions and details. A great choice of words and gorgeous imagery and imagination (this book is very high on imagination).
It is unputdownable, gripping, keeps you wanting more, and keeps you intrigued throughout. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time while reading it because it has so much suspense.
The author gives us so much information in each chapter and the worldbuilding is some of the best I have read.

This book is extremely layered and has a lot of depth and complexity. It all feels very real and messes with your mind because it is so twisted and dark.
There were some pretty confusing moments where I really got into the writing.

Going into this book I thought it would be quirky, fun, and humorous so I was pretty surprised by how dark and creepy it was. Though I ended up really enjoying it.

There is a great mix of characters too. Xar is impulsive, Wish throws caution to the wind and Bodkin is paranoid. There are great characters to read about, though they do seem pretty childish at first glance, they are pretty complicated characters. I think I will probably continue the series because I want to get to know them more.

There are also some very nice illustrations done by the author in the book. I read it on my kindle so obviously didn't get the full effect - but what I saw was amazing!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to people who like slight horror and adventure books. I think even people who don’t enjoy reading horror or haven’t read that much of it will like it too (like me!).
