Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Daisy Jones & The Six is an incredibly emotional and captivating story that explores the rise and fall of a 1970's band of the same name. It's written in a truly unconventional format - which somehow works perfectly in this case - as a transcript of interviews with the band members, their families and friends as well as other people who were involved in their journey at the time.
This book was so realistically and hauntingly beautiful and completely unique in that it was unlike anything I've ever read.
The first time I read it, I was in a massive reading slump and devoured this almost 400 page novel in 2 days - it had me in a literal chokehold. I also re-read it a mere two months after and if that isn't a testament to how much I love this book I don't know what is (and for the record it was just as incredible the second time around). I was completely gripped and I honestly cannot believe that everyone in this book is not a real person - they are so well fleshed out and well-developed, all of them having their own distinct personalities and backstories, which I think is an incredible feat for a book only written in dialogue for how well you get to know each and every one of them. Daisy, in particular, while she's definitely not my favourite character - I can fully appreciate the fact that how compelling she is mixed with her raw talent and rebellious spirit help to set the stage for some of the most interesting developments between the band as a whole. The book is a rollercoaster of relationships throughout the story, you feel like you are right their with the band the whole time - experiencing the highs and lows along with them, all while witnessing both the heartbreaking and heartwarming relationships between the characters. Beyond the music is a deeply human story, filled with multifaceted and complex relationships and the author delves into the various conflicts and tensions that arise as a result.
Another element of the book that I absolutely loved as all the music content! Rock is one of my favourite genres and even aside from that it was so cool so see the entire process of them creating the album from start to finish. Apart from the band itself, the portrayal of the music industry as a whole in the 1970's was fascinating. If I had to sum it up, Daisy Jones & The Six is truly a love letter to rock and roll and it is stunning to see the author's passion for music shine through in every word. The energy of live performances are captured in a way that is palpable and its beautiful so see the ways in which music brings people together. Along with this, the commentary and portrayal on addiction was heartbreaking to read about but breathtakingly executed.
This book, this world, and these characters have my entire heart - you need to pick this up! It's a must-read for anyone looking for a beautifully written emotional novel that will stay with you long after reading the final sentence, who loves drama, music and unforgettable characters that will feel like your best friends.Thank you so much for reading this if you got this far :)
Happy Reading! 📚💖
