Starfish - Lisa Fipps

Image
Starfish is about Ellie, a "fat" girl who has been bullied about her weight ever since she made a big splash while wearing a whale costume at her birthday party.  Everyone in her family, except her dad, is constantly judging and teasing her and her mother is really horrible to her.  This may be a story but every school everywhere in the world has a girl or two who face the same kind of problems Ellie does . But with her therapist, two great friends, her dog, and her dad on her side - Ellie is reading to finally see herself as who she really is - a big  beautiful  girl.  About the Author: Lisa Fipps is a graduate of Ball State University, award-winning former journalist, current director of marketing for a public library (where she won the Sara Laughlin marketing award), and an author of middle-grade books.  Starfish  is her debut novel. What Counts As A Spoiler?! - Spoiler Tag

I recently did the Rapid Book Fire Tag (you can find it in the book tags label on the left side of the screen), and it was really fun so when I found this tag I knew I had to do it! This Tag was created by Gunpowder, Fiction and Plot.  _ _ _ _ 1. What do you consider a spoiler? I would say a spoiler is any piece of information that you wouldn't know from a blurb or description. In terms of what counts as a spoiler, it could be the result of a relationship (any kind), a character death - and I would go as far as to say that saying "someone dies" is kind of a spoiler because it impacts the way I read the book. In one sentence - a spoiler is anything that will change the way I read the book and what I'm thinking about when I read it.  2. Does the genre you're reading impact what you consider a spoiler? Yes!  3. All the best bits are in the trailer, sometimes a synopsis can be too detailed. Do you research books prior to reading them, or do you prefer to know nothing ...

I Swapped My Brother On The Internet - Jo Simmons

Image
Jonny is sick and tired of his older brother Ted and his teasing and wishes he could have someone else for a brother instead.  When Jonny comes across siblingswap.com, he is elated! He can finally get a brother who isn't bothering him all the time! But when sibling swap sends Jonny some really weird matches, like a merboy, the ghost of Henry the Eighth and a boy raised by meerkats - suddenly Ted isn't looking so bad after all. But will Jonny ever be able to find him and bring him back? What I thought of the book: This book was a quick, fun, fast-paced read. I thought it would be a bit young for me, but I enjoyed it. It is also pretty hilarious. My rating for this book was a solid 3 stars. It was good, but not great.  While I liked reading it I found flaws in the story and quite a few plot holes. Like, every time Jonny has a sibling from the Sibling Swap arrive, he introduces them to his mother as a "friend" - but what if one of the brothers ended up staying indefinite...

Rapid Fire Book Tag

I found this book tag online and thought it would be fun to do! It was originally created by Girl Reading on youtube. _ _ _ _ E-book or Physical Book? Physical book. I do have a kindle though, and it is extremely convenient and easy to keep downloading books onto. But overall, I prefer physical books. Paperback or Hardback? Hardbacks. But paperbacks are generally easier to carry around.  Online or In-Store Book Shopping? Definitely In-Store book shopping. But online is easier if I have a particular book in mind. Trilogies or Series? I am not sure about this but I am going to say trilogies because they hold my attention span longer than series do. Heroes or Villians? Heroes from a plot point of view and I like reading from their perspective. But villains as characters are almost always more interesting. A Book You Want Everyone To Read? "Brown Girl Dreaming - by Jaqueline Woodson".  My review for it:  https://keyalovesbooks.blogspot.com/2021/02/brown-girl-dreaming-jacqueli...

The Unadoptables - Hana Tooke

The Little Tulip Orphanage has 3 rules for baby abandonment - the baby should be wrapped in a cotton blanket, placed in a wicker basket and deposited on the topmost step. In all the years that Elinora Gassbeek has been matron of the orphanage, never once have these rules been broken. Until the summer of 1880, when five babies are left in completely scandalous circumstances - one in a toolbox, one in a coal bucket, one in a picnic hamper, one in a wheat sack and one in a coffin-shaped basket. Those babies were Lotta, Fenna, Egg, Sem and Milou. They are now 12 years old (Sem is 13) and have still not been adopted. They live in horrific conditions, and the matron is absolutely horrid to all the children.  But when a sinister, mysterious man, Rotman, appears to adopt all five of them and when the children realise that not all is as it seems, they escape. While they try to search for Milou's parents and with Rotman still out for them...will they be able to stick together? A...
