Middle Grade Graphic Novel Reccomendations

Hi! It's been a while! With my exams over, I'll be back posting regularly now! And to start off, we have a compiled list of my favourite graphic novels (part 2 to come!):-

____________________________________________________________________________

1. Kristy's Great Idea (The Baby-Sitters Club series) by Raina Telgemeier and Ann M. Martin

This series is a graphic novel adaptation of the modern classic series 'The Baby-Sitters Club' by Ann M. Martin.

The first book follows Kristy Thomas whose eureka moment creates a babysitting club with her best friends, Mary Anne and Claudia as well as the new girl from New York - Stacey. It is also about Kristy accepting her stepdad-to-be and Stacey hiding a secret from the rest of the girls.

I absolutely love this series, each of the girls are unique and you get to know and love them in each of their own books as well the kids they babysit and their families. I love the art and the fact that they do act like normal girls around my age.

After you read these you should also check out the series adaptation on Netflix which I loved and have rewatched many times - they capture everything from the book very well!

2. Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

Roller Girl is another older favourite of mine, which I have re-read multiple times in the last few years.

It follows 12-year-old Astrid, who enrolls in roller derby camp for the summer. She thinks her best friend Nicole will join in too, but she goes to dance camp instead - so Astrid has to do it all alone, and she's not very good at it! In the book, Astrid grapples with her best friend changing and finding new friends along with a new hobby.

The art in this book is really fun, and Astrid is a great character to follow. It's funny, relatable, and heartwarming. Would definitely recommend it!

3. All's Faire In Middle School by Victoria Jamieson

This book follows 11-year-old Imogene (Impy) who has grown up at the Renaissance Faire, where her parents work at. It is about her going to public middle school for the first time - the kids picking on her for being different due to her upbringing and her finding her people!

This book is so funny, incredibly relatable (I think most of all of the books on this list - for me at least!) and I love the characters, the art, and the atmosphere of the Renaissance Faire.

4. Witches of Brooklyn by Sophie Escabasse

Witches of Brooklyn is about young recently orphaned Effie who moves in with her two strange aunts whom she has never met before. Her new life in Brooklyn then gets a lot more interesting when she finds out that magic runs in her family...

The art in this book is great, I absolutely love her aunts, and it's overall a very heartwarming, cozy, fun read full of humor, adventure, and magic. Also, my mother and my younger brother (who is 8) really love this book.

5. Measuring Up by Lily LaMotte and Ann Xu

Measuring Up follows Cici, who has just moved from Taiwan to Seattle in America and really misses her grandmother who is back in Taiwan. So Cici enters a cooking competition with a cash prize for the winner in hopes of buying a ticket for her grandmother to fly to America for her 70th birthday.

This book will make your mouth water so much!! The Masterchef lover in me really enjoyed all of it. I really like the art style in this book, its also very quick (probably the shortest one on this list) and would be perfect for younger readers as well!

6. New Kid

New Kid follows Jordan Banks starting at a new school where diversity is low and he struggles to fit in. He also makes friends, deals with bullies at his school, and him escaping into his art.

It doesn't really have a standout plot and is kind of just a day-to-day life scenario, so know that going in.

I really loved this book, and absolutely adored the art style. Also can't wait to read the sequel!

7. Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian by Tim Probert

This book follows Bea, the adopted granddaughter of the Pig Wizard, who lives on the planet Irpa deep in the forest. One day, when her grandfather goes missing - Bea sets out to find him with the help of Cad, a member of the Galdurians, an ancient race thought to be extinct, who thinks that the Pig Wizard can help him find his missing race.

With each of their missions, Bea and Cad set out to find the Pig Wizard and save Irpa.

Lightfall is full of magic, pretty colours, and friendship - and it also has quite possibly my favourite art in a graphic novel ever!
