My Middle Grade March TBR (To-Be-Read)

Image
I have picked 3 books for each prompt (apart from the decade one) that I am definitely going to read and try to finish, so 13 books. I do have a couple others that are also on my radar - that I am hoping to  read, and I will if I have time.                                                                                                                                           1. A book with a silhouette on the cover  2. A book with strong family elements 3. A book featuring travel, a journey story, or an adventure 4. A retelling (of any sort), a fairytale retelling, or a book that has fairytale elements 5. A book published in th...

Middle Grade March - Read-a-thon

I did not know about this until a few days ago - and now I am determined to take part and complete all the points of the challenge. Middle Grade March (this is the 4th year of it happening) is a month long read-a-thon, and takes place (obviously) throughout the month of March.  It is hosted by 3 booktubers - Life Between Words Books and Jams The Curly Reader You can visit their channels to find out more about this, they have announcement videos, recommended reads for Middle Grade March, and the books they are planning on reading. There are also multiple other videos and websites recommending books specifically for this. If you read even just 1 middle grade book during this month, you have succeeded in participating. In case you did not know, middle grade books are targeted at the audience of 8-12 or 13 year olds and are usually about a character within that age range.  Of course, these are basically all the books I am currently reading so I will be using the 5 prompts that the...

Rumblestar - Abi Elphinstone

Image
Casper Tock is an 11 year old who hates risks, is allergic to adventures and trembles at the mere thought of an unpredictable event.  So, an incredibly nasty shock comes to him when he accidentally stumbles into Rumblestar, which is an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts and creatures. From the moment he sets foot into this alternate world, all Casper wants to do is find a way home - but Rumblestar is in distress.  An extremely evil harpy named Morg is sending her followers (the Midnights), into the kingdom to wreak havoc and start forming a path for her to enter and steal the Unmapped kingdom's magic for herself. But Casper cannot simply be oblivious to this situation - because the future of his own world (the Faraway) and that of Rumblestar and the other Unmapped kingdoms depends on someone putting a stop to Morg's plans.  And so, together with Utterly Thankless, a girl who is allergic to proper behaviour and hates rules, and her pocket dragon Arlo, Casper em...

The Mysterious Benedict Society - Trenton Lee Stewart

Image
Reynard "Reynie" Muldoon doesn't think of himself as extraordinary, but instead weird and out of place, especially in his orphanage where he is constantly teased. One day, Reynie and his special tutor Ms. Perumal come across an advertisement while perusing the newspaper that reads : "ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES?" And it happens to be that he is gifted and that means taking a series of tests. Odd, mysterious tests. Increasingly peculiar tests that go far beyond the classroom, or even the realm of normality.  By the end of these tests, Reynie has passed and so have three other rather remarkable children, his new teammates. Sticky Washington is bit of a bookworm, and never forgets a single fact that he reads.  Kate Wetherall is quite athletic and carries her handy and trusty bucket everywhere she goes.  And Constance Contraire is very small, rude and stubborn.  Together, this group of children are recruited by Mr. Benedict to infiltrate...

The Wild Robot - Peter Brown

Image
When robot Roz (or ROZZUM unit 7134 ) opens her eyes for the first time, she finds that she is all alone in the middle of a robot graveyard on a wild, incredibly remote island.  She has absolutely no idea how she got there or what her purpose is - but it doesn't take long for her to realise that she is in extreme need of shelter, - and allies.  Roz is not a robot built for the outdoors, but thanks to her programming she learns to adapt.  Initially, Roz is rejected by the island's animals. After a while, though, she adopts a gosling (Brightbill) she accidentally orphaned and together they grow, learn and become an incredibly important part of the community.  And when Roz's mysterious past returns to haunt her, it's her new friends and extended family that will stand by her and come to her aid.    This genre of this book is science fiction. It has a lot of heart and explores many important themes and topics. The illustrations are beautiful and the choic...

Brown Girl Dreaming - Jacqueline Woodson

Image
I honestly do not know how to begin, Gorgeous writing Powerful images So much heart and So much hope Every page was a gift - a little window into her soul, heartbreak, grief, joy, family, loneliness, childhood, history, love. I savoured  and then devoured it. I wish I could buy copies for the world. This book reached into my ribcage, pulled at my heart, and returned it a little scarred but more healed than it has ever been before. This book is a memoir written in free verse. It is a non-fiction autobiography. It takes place in the 1960's and 1970's.  Jacqueline is an amazing character and reading about her journey through childhood, her discovering her dreams, growing up in the segregated south, her emotions, was like opening a window into the author's soul and getting to experience her story first-hand. Jacqueline Amanda Woodson was born to Jack Austin Woodson and Mary Anne Irby on February 12th, 1963. Her father was determined that his children would not live a life contr...

Image
This story is about an eleven year old girl, Property Jones (she is called  Property because she was left in the lost property cupboard of a bookshop when she was five years old). For 6 years now, she has been living at The White Hart (the bookshop) with Netty and Michael, but she has a whopper of a secret that she has been hiding all this time - she can't read.  And then there is a newspaper article printed announcing the chance to win the Montgomery book emporium in a raffle, the biggest and most magnificent bookshop in the world! When her family wins the raffle, they move in to the Emporium and Property deals with a lot of change from The White Hart. But not all is as it seems at the Great Montgomery Book Emporium, and soon Property Jones finds herself in a whole lot of trouble. This book is appropriate for ages 9-12.  The genre of "The Bookshop Girl" is fiction. It also has some great illustrations. I really love this book and would rate it 4 1/2 stars out of 5. ...
